It’s a testament to Ariel’s improvisational abilities that I basically just said to her “be an instragram influencer doing a bondage workout” and half an hour of non-stop improvised dialogue, chatter to the camera and workout just came flooding out. I’m in awe, I can’t do that off the cuff like that!
This was a new experiment for me – I don’t usually film things on a single moving camera. But that’s very much the style of the clips we were emulating for this idea, so I needed to get that fluid look and feel. I had my Sony A7SIII mounted to a gimbal rig and shooting at 100 frame per second because I knew I’d also want to slow down the action at impactful moments.
I wasn’t quite confident of getting every shot this way so I did my usual thing of putting in a static cameras for a master wide shot just in case. Which meant that I ended up with a continuous behind the scenes rolling take which I though you might enjoy as a behind-the-scenes bonus. I really like using the camera on this particular gimbal – I’ve tried three or four different designs over the years and this one is definitely the best. It’s a Letus Helix Junior and the thing that is different about is that the camera is free to rotate about its optical axis. This makes it much easier to adjust when you change lenses, and in principle allows really cool rotating shots (although you need to use the thumbpad controller for that and I find it tricky to do whilst operating – it would benefit from an extra crew pair of hands). But what it really is great for is improvised smooth moves which change height – crane or boom shots, in other words. With all the other gimbals I’ve tried, co-ordinating tilting the camera down whilst physically moving it up requires the use of a thumb controller – and like the roll axis on this design, that really needs a second crew person to operate. This one you just put a relative angle between your left and right wrists and the camera tilts accordingly. I found it much easier to operate smoothly and with precision to get good crane shots – whereas all the other designs I’d tried are really restricted to panning shots when you are operating solo.
